Besides the bottoms of its feet, Robosapien has only one other perfectly flat surface on its entire body: the speaker grill on its back. Something I learned from all my years of biomorphic building is that you don t build things square. Things that are square basically fall down on two axes. And what happens is that Robosapien is basically built entirely upon biological angles. Not the way that you look when you stand, but the way that you basically fall into, the way when you sort of go limp, in something like a Jacuzzi. Your arms don t fall down to your sides, they float right in front of you. And your knees go up as well. And that s exactly what the shape of the Robosapien is based on. All the motor axes, as you can see here, all rotate around a very nice hexagonal frame, all based on very different angles they re all 30 s and 15 s and 60 s. Mark Tilden, February 13, 2005

But there is much more to it than just aesthetics. Starting at Robosapien s belly button and measuring to its elbows, shoulders, legs, it forms a nice hexagon (see Figure 5-3). This provides Robosapien with a consistent center of gravity that greatly aids its walking and movement ability.

Through Push Notifications Apple provides application developers with a tool to communicate with their users even when the application is not active on the device. This is a very powerful feature since it enables long-running sessions while saving battery life. An obvious drawback for application developers is that you need a server-side component to facilitate the communication between your application and the iPhone. Apple acts as a middleman to deliver messages to the device.

There are four main elements to Robosapien s physical anatomy: its motors and suspension, its electronics, its head, and its external shell.

The iPhone Dev Center web site gives an excellent explanation1 about the Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) which we will quickly reiterate here. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. First, the application must register itself with APNS. APNS will return a token that can be used to send notifications to the device. The application must communicate this token to the server side component. The server side component must create a TLS (secure) connection to APNS using the Provider certificate. During the lifetime of the session, the server side component must send messages to APNS in a binary format. The user will be presented with a Push Notification on the iPhone and gets the opportunity to start the application; if the application is running a callback method will be called.

Another important aspect to consider is feedback. Since the server keeps a client session online while the application on the iPhone is off, it could happen that a user either disables push, or deinstalls the application altogether. Apple uses the feedback service to provide the application with feedback on messages that couldn t be delivered to the device for one of the reasons previously stated. The server will then terminate the session.

Robosapien is based on a seven-motor design. These motors are based on the design Tilden created for the B.I.O. Bugs, and are remarkable for toy motors. One of the things we were so pleased about, the lifetime of a standard toy grade 130 motor is, maximum, about 144 hours. About a week or so.We ve never had a failure on a Robosapien we ve gotten as much as 400 hours out of some of our motors....
