Add a new table and define its elements manually with the New Element com mand from the Add submenu in the Schema top-level menu. (This command is also available in the context menu of the DataSet designer.) Add new elements to a table in the DataSet by pointing to Add on the Schema menu and clicking New Element. This section has two main objectives. First, we introduce an imaginary company, Adventure Works Cycles (AWC), which we reference throughout the rest of this book. Change the way a field is rendered in XML for example, to render it as an attribute instead of an XML element by clicking in the leftmost column and selecting an item from the drop-down list. Create a relationship between two tables by selecting the two tables, pointing to Add on the Schemu menu, and then clicking Add Relation. (You can also reach this command from the shortcut menu of a table in the schema.) This command brings up the Edit Relation dialog box. It has already implemented a web-based ordering online transaction processing (OLTP) system to capture sales orders online. 23

The Announcements, Events, and Links lists aren t just text files or any other sort of mundane objects; they re blocks of records in database tables. A single SharePoint site can have as many lists as you like, and those lists can contain whatever fields you like. What s more, you can add, modify, or delete lists using nothing more than a browser. And when you create a list, SharePoint automatically creates forms to maintain and display its content. The My T-Shirt Inventory page in Figure 1-4 provides an example of this. A team member created this list, populated it with data, and displayed it, all without leaving the browser.

Alternate between the DataSet view and the XML view by clicking buttons near the bottom of the XSD designer. For example, you can use the XML view of the schema to alter the order of the columns in each DataTable, which affects the order in which fields are shown in a DataGrid control.
